What is the diet for nephrotic syndrome patients with serious edema?
Generally, people with Nephrotic Syndrome have four main or obvious symptoms
which are: a large amount of proteinuria, the protein of which in 24 hours is
more than 3.5g, hypoproteinemia, the protein in plasma is less than 30g /L,
edema and hyperlipemia. On the basis of this, we can arrange patients’ diet.
For those with nephrotic syndrome and serious edema, we should limit the
intake of water or fluid.
1. People with nephrotic syndrome should minimize the intake of following
foods: milk, water, soda, juice and other beverages, ice cubes, ice cream
pudding, popsicles and soup. A large amount of protein leaks out as we mentioned
above, which leads to low protein in plasma, thus causing the decline of plasma
oncotic pressure. When it declines from normal one (3.3~4kPa) to 0.8~1.1kPa,
water in the blood vessels will move to the interstitial fluid, thus causing
edema or swelling. If we at this time take in water, it will worsen nephrotic
syndrome.
2. As we mentioned, a large amount of protein leaking out. A healthier diet
rich in proteins, can definitely help to prevent further kidney damage. The main
aim of diet for nephrotic syndrome is to compensate for protein loss by taking
adequate amounts of protein. This can cause tubular damage to the kidneys.
Moderate protein intake can definitely preserve renal functions. Foods such as
wheat, sprouts, legumes, eggs, lean meat, dry fish and pulses are a rich source
of proteins and must be included in one's daily diet.
3. Low fat diet should not be consumed, as cholesterol levels are already
high in these patients. One must stay away from saturated fats (margarine,
cheese) and excess of oily foods.
4. Avoid Processed Foods
Processed foods not only contain high amounts of added sodium, but also
contain other chemicals that can be difficult or even dangerous to digest,
thereby further damaging the nephrotic system and worsening the condition.
4. stop drinking wine or alcohol
Longtime drinking could result anemia, platelet function disorder, various
kinds of haemorrhage, which would result the gastrointestinal malabsorption,
nutritional deficiency, and also lead to hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis,
etc.
