Diet Principle for Patients with Diabetic Nephropathy

As with many other diseases, a proper diet is quite important for patients with Diabetic Nephropathy. Therefore, it is very important to take preventive measures to slow down the disease progression. A reasonable diet is crucial for patients with Diabetic Nephropathy to prevent the disease progression and the diet principles are as follows:
1. Protein: The patients should adjust its protein intake according to their specific condition. Patients should maintain C-protein from 0.6 gram to 0.8 gram/per kilogram of body weight each day. Besides, it is good for patients to eat fish and lean meat. The high quality protein should cover more than half of the total protein intake.
2. Salt: In order to protect the kidney function and to lighten the burden of kidneys, patients with Diabetes should maintain the intake of salt within 3 gram each day.
3. Calcium: As a result of the electrolyte imbalance caused by the disease, the synthesis of calcium should be decreased, along with the supplement of calcium. Therefore, we should select our food carefully in our daily life.
4. Calories: It is very important for patients to control their blood sugar level. The key of controlling blood sugar is to limit amount of calorie strictly, sugar intake should be about 50%~60% of the total calorie intake.
